Cala en Porter is a mixture of residential homes , Villas and Apartments with a few smaller sized hotels. It is set on the cliffs overlooking a stunning bay in a now protected nature area offering fabulous views of countryside, sands and turquoise waters. The resort attracts couples and lots of Spanish as well as english and german families, particularly for self catering holidays.
As the light fades the frogs in the nature reserve begin their soothing nightly chorus. Cala en Porter offers a variety of Bars and Restaurants to suit varying tastes. The local tourist authorities have invested in 2008 so there is now a new play area for children and the centre has a new plaza for residents and visitors enjoyment. Certainly while many of the Bars and Restaurants cater for uk tourist tastes, there are some less british places to visit. Can Bernat Restaurant just outside on the resort offers great food ( open fire grilled meats a speciality ) and an attractive terrace looking out onto the local countryside. La Vela ( good midday Tapas ) , La Paletta and Il Pulpo Restaurants are also recommended.
What distinguishes Cala en Porter is its location. Set on the plateau over a fabulous bay with terrific views of the untouched bay on the other side and the valley that extends miles inland from behind the beach and can be walked as part of the Cami de Cavalls.
Rated as one of , if not the best resort beach on Menorca, especially for smaller children due it's perfect sands, gently sloping shallows, falling into crystal clear turquoise waters. And while this makes it very popular for children it's big enough for those who prefer to avoid the little ones to find their ideal spots too!
The beach can be reached on foot via steps, by car with free car parking under shade or a little resort train ( see picture ). At the beach front their are public toilets and a red cross/lifeguards post. There is a good selection of beachside Cafe bars and snack restaurants with decent offerings along the entire length of the promenade.
Yes many (unfit, rarely walk anywhere types) will complain about the steps to get back up from the beach, but they like everyone else adore the views from below and above. Some things in life are worth a little effort! Plenty of pausing areas.
Wheel chair users can now enjoy a shaded area, their own toilet and wheelcair access to the sea with assistance.
The beach and water is the mainstay of the day time activities and there is usually a volley ball net set up on the beach to use. Pedalos with slides and simple Kayaks can be hired from the beach. There are childrens play areas at the beach and in the resort centre along with floodlight tennis courts for hire. Sailing is available in the nearby watersports centres of S'Algar or Fornells and golf in Son Parc is just 25 mins away. There is a new childrens play centre in the centre with a varierty of charged entertainments and small bar so the children can loose their energy on bouncy castles while mums and dads look on while enjoing a drink or coffee.
Kayaking is available for more serious outings from Menorca en Kayak based at the beach entrance to Hotel Aquamarina. The bay is ideal for kayaking and there are there are caves just outside the bay and Cales Coves just along the coast heading east.
Set in beautiful countryside, there are walks ( also signed as the Cami de Cavalls ). Starting near the football pitch a path to Cales Coves. Close to Cala D'en Porter are a lot of open air prehistoric sites (e.g Torralba den Salord ), with underground caves ( So no Casana ) which give you a real sense of life all those years ago.
As you approach Cala en Porter you will see vines on the right hand side. Why not visit the local vineyard Sa Forana in San Climent.

Cugullonet Nou, Cami de Sa Forana, 07712 Sant Climent - www.saforana.com

Mahon will mostly be written on timetables, signposts as Maó it's correct local name. Also posted in the local papers eg Ultima Hora Menorca, Menorca towards the back pages are most of the islands bus timetables. You will nearly always find a copy of this in a spanish cafe bar ( any day in season will do ) - make notes, please don't take paper as its there for all to read. If you are staying longer than a week take a trip on this good network and see some of the other resorts/towns first hand.

Out on the edge of the bay entrance is Covas Den Xorio (see below) one the island most spectacular dance locations( no noise though). In town there are a variety of Bars and Restaurants with differing clientel both toursist & non tourist, young and old. The Flava bar ( www.flavabarmenorca.com ) is trying to introduce some better music events into the resort centre and is worth a look.
Live tribute acts tour the island and are on stage at Sa Paisa- Free to watch if you buy a drink and some can be very entertaining.
A walk down to the beach where the frogs perform their nightly chorus is a very relaxing change.
As with most resorts in Menorca, organised evening entertainment here is generally to be found in the resort hotels and some bars. Mahon, Ciutadella and Es Castell however offer alot more with something for everyone, but with none of the "bing drink clubbing" to be found on Ibizia and Majorca. Menorca is not Majorca but that is why many people come here!
Mahon is an easy trip early evenings on the bus with a return taxi faire should you return late ( taxi faires to Mahon around 25 Eur ) . Last bus to Mahon at 20:00 ( at Bar Pons stop ). Last bus to Cala en Porter from Mahon 19:40 ( buses run mon-sat) BUS 31 from TMSA.
Located in huge spectacular natural caves some 25m above the sea at the entrance to Cala en Porter bay. Take a look at our video below for a feel of this magical place.
Cova d´en Xoroi
A double bonus. Undoubtedly the most dramatic nightspot on the island. Set high, literally in the rocks, above the sea it's an atmospheric Cafe-bar areas with fantastic sea views by day. From 19:00 the music is soothing ambient sounds to watch the sunsets by and after 23:00-dawn a disco with one of the most original locations and atmospheres with famous guest DJs. There is a entrance charge during the day which includes a voucher for a drink-It's well worth it.
Opening times: 11:30 'til dawn. Daily May to October and weekends outside of these months.
Just 200 meters from Xoroi is a great Spanish Restaurant La Palette ( Leg of lamb recommended)
Can be reached via a path from Cala en Porter.
A beautiful picturesque spot, favoured by visiting yachts and dreamers. Best visited early mornings and evenings, where the light brings out the scenery. An exciting place for youngsters, dreamy of pirates as the local burial caves up in the limestone walls and rambling cove walks let their imaginations run free. Believed to be an ancient burial ground and was in fact the very first recognised port of Menorca as used by the Romans when they occupied the island. Can be reached on foot from Cala en Porter or park and walk at Son Vitamina (approx. 30 mins). Road down is NOT suitable for hire cars unless you want to pay for suspension damage! On the Cami di Cavalls route.
Open Air history: Torralba Den Salford is a pre-historic settlement on the pretty country road between Alaior and Cala en Porter. Founded around 1000 BC the settlement is protected with a modest entrance fee and features a stunning Taula and a number of atmospheric underground dwellings.

Taula at Torralba Den Salford
This is a great town for wandering early mornings or late evenings when the heat of sun is not around. The "third" capital of the island and a cultural centre. The old town is very pretty and makes a great change to the beach, with a good mix of little shops to browse, Cafes, Bars and Restaurants. And, some great home made ice cream parlours! Childrens playground on the pretty town square (next to ice cream cafes!). Alaior has a weekly market plus an evening artisans market with jewellry and other handicrafts and clothing.
Ladies Alaior is home to the Pons Quintana shoe factory shop. An name relatively unknown in the UK because most of its high quality leather shoes are exported to France and Germany. At the factory shop you will get heavily reduced prices on beautiful high quality shoes.
Arenal den Castell, Son Parc, Son Bou, & Cala en Porter selfcaterers - Visit the larger supermarkets here at the Poligno ( commercial area ) for a much better food and price selection.
Located on the main road (ME-12) from Mahon to Cala en Porter is well worth a visit if you are in the area. "Famous" for Es Casino Bar-Restaurant (some of the best tasting/value) Menu del Dias on the island. Great Music nights: Tuesday evening improv Jazz in backrooms of the Es Casino Bar-Restaurant. Lovely converted Farmhouse Musupta Cusi for Tapas and drinks. Both places are next to each other. Last shop on the right of main street is a traditional bakers where you can experience tatsy bread made in real wood fired ovens. Home to one of the best restaurants on the island ,Es Moli Foc in Carrer Sant Lorenc.
If you are an independent traveller and waiting to catch a flight then come here for for final drinks and meals in a more personal environment. Airport is just 5 mins drive away. Tabaconist shop and 6 am cafes too!
Mahon has a great mediterranean charm around the centre and harbour. Busy pavement Cafes and Bars, superb fruit and fish markets and all enclosed in a maze of narrow streets with architecture and many reminders of its Georgian past. In addition to the traditional the town offers a myriad of stylish shops and bars. Along the whole length of the harbour quayside (Moll de Llevant) there is an electic collection of Cafes, Bars and Restaurants for all pockets and styles. A spectacular setting above the huge natural harbour with ships and boats of every shape and sizes.
Es Castell - is a delightful harbour town with a great mix of little shops, cafes, bars, Restaurants and clubs to suit all tastes, price ranges and styles. Not just the extensive harbour areas but also in the many side streets. In the main Cala Fons harbour the old fishermans caves have been adapted by various Bars and Restaurants. Es Castell is a very popular eating place for lunchtime Menu del Dias and a great place to while away the summer evenings.
Son Parc offers the islands only ( 2011) 18 hole golf course with putting green and (floodlit) driving range. There are also tennis courts available for hire (raquets and balls can be hired at golf shop ) and a comfortable club house bar with restaurant overlooking the course . The clubhouse terrace (open to non players) offers snacks, drinks and evening meals. Tee times can be booked in advance as can the tennis courts.
