Things to See and Do in Es Migjorn Gran
Our photo tour will show many of these attractions and their locations.
Probably the town least touched by tourism on Menorca. The style here is non hurried and for those with time to enjoy the scenery. Relax with the locals in the Cafes and watch the world do it's thing. Is a better place to eat than Santo Tomas while passing through and enjoying the slower paced life.
Every coastal resort is part of an attractive around Menorca coastal walk - Cami de Cavalls. You will often discover swimming coves and virgin beaches. The distinctive vermillion signs will guide you.
Covas des Column

Food shopping is catered for well enough in small supermarkets in the town itself. There is a small summer evening market in Es Migjorn Gran (Plaza de la Iglesia) Tuesday evenings and the regular Farmers and Artisans market in Ferreries on Saturday mornings. Es Migjorn is home to a well knowm Avarcas shoe manufacturer , MIB with a factory shop on the local commercial estate ( Poligno ).

San Agueda Castle
Due to its political symbolism the castle was destroyed and abandoned by the re-occupying Kings of Aragon, but it remains one of the island most attractive walks with great views at the summit.
Built circa 1230 a castle contructed by the Moorish occupiers (the name is based on the Arabic name "Sen Agaiz") for defence sitting on top of the island's better vantage points on the island. Reached by a 45 min. climb up an ancient path which is in places was an old Roman road ( over two thousand years old ) - the views from the top are superb.
Like many ancient sites Santa Agueda has sprung many rich legends and myths including buried biblical treasures.
Travel the ME-1 between Ferrerias and Ciutadella. Take the turn for Els Alocs and continue 1.5 km until you reach an abandoned building on right ( see photo ). This marks the start of the path to the top of the hill.

This is a great town for wandering early mornings or late evenings when the heat of sun is not around. The "third" capital of the island and a cultural centre. The old town is very pretty and makes a great change to the beach, with a good mix of little shops to browse, Cafes, Bars and Restaurants. There are several clothes and shoe boutiques offering original items not chain store repetition. Childrens playground on the pretty town square (next to ice cream cafes!). Alaior has a weekly market plus an evening market with jewellery , other handicrafts and clothing.
Ladies Alaior is home to the Pons Quintana shoe factory shop. An name relatively unknown in the UK because most of its high quality leather shoes are exported to France and Germany. At the factory shop you will get reduced prices on beautiful high quality shoes.
