Mahon is often seen in english holiday literature as the name for the island's capital. The correct name though is Mao (prenounced 'Maow') and will be used in local literature, maps, road signs and on buses/timetables.
Provide free local and island maps, other tourist literatures and advice. Some island attraction tickets can only be purchased form tourist offices. Will have a printed sheet with what's on this week in several languages.

Mahon ( Old Cloisters ) and Ciutadella markets are set in attractive settings that adds to their atmosphere.
There has an island wide bus network in addition to taxis and local transport services. Note that there are very few coastal roads so you will travel inland and then back out to the coast. This is due to most of the island being in private ownership and helps preserve the island from over development and spoiling of the beautiful natural coastlines.
Each region has its own licensed taxis so there are different tel. numbers. Note that fares while metered are fixed by distance, so you can check/ask what the fare will be before. Luggage Items may inccur a 50-75 cent a piece supplemental charge.

Driving is generally easy. The road system is small consisting mostly of a few major roads (connecting to a single east to west main road the ME-1) and delightfull smaller roads. There are no motorways and very few dual carriageways. Seat belts are compulsary front and rear and there is a no tolerance to drink driving.
Might be able to help you in the event of a lost passport where you need a temporary one to re-enter a country not in Schengen zone eg UK!. Lost passports should be reported to police at airport for necessary administration procedures.
