Drinking Water

The water from the taps (unless otherwise marked 'non potable') is fine to drink but will probably have a chemical taste in the background. Bottled water is cheap and universally available. 'con gas' is carbonated.

Taxis

Each region has its own licensed taxis so there are different tel. numbers. Note that fares are fixed by distance, so you can check/ask what the fare will be before. Luggage Items will often inccur a 50-75 cent a piece supplemental charge.

Post

The main Post Offices are in: Mahon: Buen Aire 15. 971 35 66 29. Ciudadela: Pza. del Borne 9. Tel. 971 38 00 81.

Most Post Offices open from 08.30 - 14.30 and in summer, all day. Stamps can also be bought at an "Estanco" (tobacconist). The current rate for postage to E.E.C. countries is 53 centimos for both letters and postcards, Spain: 28 Ctos; rest: 78 C.

Chemists

Farmacias close at the weekends but there is always one on duty in each town. See the rota on chemists' doorways. Most resorts also have medical centres and chemists, open during the tourist season.

Shops Hours

Opening times usually 09.00 -13.30 and 16.30/17.00 - 20.30. Big supermarkets open Mon. - Sat. 09.00 - 21.00, and some on Sunday mornings. (Some small shops open until 10.00). Exceptions are in the tourist resorts.

Banks

Open Monday to Saturday, 8.15 - 14.00, but in spring/summer are closed on Saturdays. The same applies to the Post Office Savings Bank. From October to June Sa Nostra and "La Caixa" open on Thursday afternoons. N.B. Many banks have special exchange facilities in the tourist season, also at the resorts. Eurocheques and credit cards are accepted in many establishments.

Markets

Mahon and Ciutadella have fabulous fresh food markets in the town centres. Ferrerias holds a special open local craftmarket on Saturday mornings in the town centre. Open air travelling markets selling clothes, crafts and 'souvenir wear' visit all towns in the mornings as follows: ( generally same stall holders travelling around).

Most markets will be early starters (08:00-13:00) to avoid the heat so if you want the best bargain get there early!.
