Overview
Es Canutells is a mixture of residential homes, private holiday villas and a large but lowrise apartment hotel complex ( Hotel Mar de Menorca ). Located between the larger resorts of Binibeca and Cala den Porter this is a perhaps destination for those seeking a relaxed, uncommercialised resort.
The resort is located on one side of an attractive inlet with a sandy beach backed with natural pristine gorge with an extensive cane 'forest'. While Es Canutells is itself rather quiet and more for relaxtion there are lots more on offer within a short (car/bus journey) distance.
It is recommended to have a hire car if staying here or maybe that's just what you want - quiet and to not move from the lounger!
The Grupotel Mar de Menorca is the only Hotel in this location. A self contained holiday complex designed for families.
Sant Climent is the nearest town around 5-10 minutes away by car and also serviced by bus. Mahon, the capital, is only 10 minutes drive away so you're not far from a lot more to see and do if you get the desire.
2019 - Typical price to hire 2 loungers + (fixed) Umbrella is between 17-19 Euro all day. Reductions usually (after 15:00). Facility closes around 19:00
A safe and basic beach protected by attractive cliffs with very natural unspoilt surroundings. There is small bar restaurant with views over the beach and bay. Access from above the resort and via the village's fishing boats jetty.
There are a small handful of shops with everyday items catering mainly for the residential community and more focused on the holidaymaker located at the Aparthotel.
Banks, chemist, bakers, Cafes and supermarket along with very good restaurants can be found in the nearby town of San Climent. Buses will also take you to the capital Mahon. 20 minutes drive or so along the coast is S'Algar a favourite water sports and diving centre.
Es Canutells - See and Do
Some of Menorcas' famous under water caves at nearby Cap D'en Font make this a good base for keen divers. And for the less enthusiastic divers there is good snorkelling just off the beach. If you fancy something a little bit more wild there is a very pretty virgin cove and beach ( Cala Biniparratx ) just up the coast westwards-follow the coast road to Binidali. A small limestone gorge with cut out caves near the beach.
A less known place is the Necropolis burial caves that are cut into the soft coastline at Es Canutell-Parents should make sure children are not un accompanied and extreme care is taken
There is one of the island most respected restaurant Es Moli Foc in San Climent. Plus some fabuous quality restaurants in the pretty neighbouring villages of Torret and S'Ullastrar.
There are delightful narrow track dry stome wall lined lanes all around the north of Es Canutells to explore - even the thwack of a cricket bat on ball at the nearby Menorca Cricket Club
There are some lovely drives along idylic narrow country roads through the country side to the villages of Llucamanens and Torret. Torret is picture postcard pretty, leave the car and just walk through it. There are also some highly regarded restaurants ( Sa Pedrera des Pujol, Sa Parereta d'en Doro, Pan y Vino ) . Llucamances is a pretty hamlet and just a further short trip to El Grill, a favourite rustic Bar Restaurant (in old farmhouse ) on the airport access road ( you passed it as you left the airport !) where you will find some of the islands best grilled meat dishes and chill out terrace for evenings.
Visit La Rueda Bar-Restaurant at Sant Lluis, which has a counter with nearly 3 meters of delicious Tapas.
Getting About
Mahon will mostly be written on timetables, front of buses and signposts as Maó, it's local name. If you are staying longer than a week take a trip on this good network and see some of the other sights, resorts/towns and attractions.
Buses - Route 22 only four a day make the 25 minute trip into Mahon via Sant Climent but good value at 1.60€ one way.
A one way journey by taxi from the airport should be around 15-20 Euro
Es Canutells Nightlife
As with most smaller resorts in Menorca, evening entertainment here is generally to be found in the resort' bars but nothing that would ever compare to the neon jungle of the popular resorts along the south coast of Majorca. Mahon and Ciutadella however offer something for everyone, but with none of the "binge drink clubbing" to be found on Ibizia and Majorca.
