Playa den Fornells - Location
located on the North East Coast. Approximately 35 mins., from the Airport.
Overview
Not to be confused with Fornells, Playas den Fornells( Platages de Fornells) is a self contained designer created set of 3 dedicated holiday areas/villages. An impressive and very natural beach ( Cala Tirant ) which is very safe for children with shallow sandy bottoms. Clean clear warm waters make the area ideal for snorkelling with good local facilities for wind surfing and other water sports.
The villages are set in collections on the hill sides overlooking the bay with communal pools and gardens of tropical plants adding to the atmosphere. The bulk of the packages accommodation here is in a couple of hotels at the resort entrance and then small clusters of low rise apartments built in traditional menorca style.
Playa den Fornells is close to some of the North coast's most beautiful virgin beaches ( Cavalleria, Binimel-la and Cala Pregonda ) so you will be able to experience their pleasures easily.
Beach
Very natural unspoilt beach especially good for smaller children due it's gently sloping shallows into crystal clear turquoise waters. And while this makes it very popular for children it's big enough for those who prefer to avoid the little ones to find their ideal spots too!
The beach can be reached via car ( follows signs for Platges de Fornells from ME-15 ) or on foot from the resort using the well constructed wooden steps and walk ways.
See and Do
Nature dominates this area. There are beautiful walks galore along the coast and inland. In spring (mid march/april ) the area is particularly beautiful and full of wildlife.
Walks
You can wander along signed coastal paths ( Cami de Cavalls routes ) upto the Cap de Cavalleria/Eco Museum ( Cafeteria and Toilet facilites available ) from western edge of beach.
There is delightful countryside and wetlands ( Es Prat ) and the joy of arriving at the virgin beaches of Cavalleria, Binimel-la and Cala Pregonda .
Menorca Holiday Tips
Late afternoon Walks: Walk to Fornells via the Cami de Cavall signposted coastal path, enjoy a meal/drink, watch the sunset and return via Taxi.
Watersports
Fornells
A watersports and restaurant favourite. The village with it's speciality seafood restaurants is located at the entrance to a huge enclosed natural bay whose protected waters make it perfect for all manner of sail based 'messing about'. More like a large salt water lake, the wind conditions here are great for beginners of anything that floats on water. Very pleasant for lunch time and evening drinks and meals alongside the harbour quay. Lot's of boat excursions and activities are based here. Perfect for a quiet authentic Menorca stay. Mountain Bike Hire. Watersports include Jetski,Waterskiing,Windsurfing, Dinghy,Kayaks and Diving.
The sail and boat 'paradise' of Fornells bay is a walk or a short drive away over/around the headland.
Diving
There is a diving centre.
Son Parc Golf and Tennis
Son Parc offers the island's only 18 hole golf course set in wooded countryside complete with putting green and (floodlit) driving range. There are also tennis courts available for hire (raquets and balls can be hired at golf shop ) and Bar-Restaurant Es Bruc GOLF with outside terrace overlooking the course . Tee times can be booked in advance as can the tennis courts. Website
Getting About
Mahon will mostly be written on timetables, front of buses and signposts as Maó, it's local name. If you are staying longer than a week take a trip on this good network and see some of the other sights, resorts/towns and attractions.
Playa Den Fornells has three bars and a restaurant to while away the evenings with good conversation. with many more in Fornells Village. The cosmopolitan capital of Mahon(Mao) is closeby with a wide varierty of entertainments including a public casino.
As with most resorts in Menorca, evening entertainment here is generally to be found in the resort' bars but nothing that would ever compare to the neon jungle of the popular resorts along the south coast of Majorca. Mahon and Ciutadella however offer something for everyone, but with none of the "low class" to be found on Ibizia and Majorca. Menorca is NOT Majorca but that is why many people come here!
