Avarcas

Once worn, you'll quickly realise while they are so popular as summer footwear. The shape is unisex and the soft leather moulds to any shape foot. Avarques de Menorca were originally practical footwear for work outdoors ( still are ) made from soft leather and old car tires for a hardwearing sole that worked well on stony ground.

Long gone are the days when Avarcas came in one colour and no variation. Based on the basic design of comfort and coolness for summer they now come in formal evening wear styles, with heels and platforms. Despite their simplicity they lend themselves to individualism and these days are offered in a myriad of (handpainted) designs, and a rainbow of different soft coloured leathers. A big pioneer is RIA of Ferreries.

Avarcas - where to buy

Literally you can buy them all over the island - in your resort, souvenir/clothes/shoe shops, boutiques, factory shops you can even have them custom made in a couple of days and of course these days online! Support the island and buy only from local manufacturers :-)

Travelling Markets will have a good selection. Es Castell ,Mahon and Ciutadella have several places along the harbour open in the evenings to combine with summer night markets visits too. Avarca pop has a great little shop in Es Castell harbour.

Quality does vary. The best are made with nubuck leather which gives them their unbelievable comfort.
