Artisan Jewellery
Joyería artesanal - where to buy
Menorca's Rich Jewellry making heritage
People have been setting metal and stones on these islands for thousands of years. Menorca’s prehistoric Talayotic culture (Bronze Age → Iron Age) left numerous archaeological finds
Modern jewellery-making on Menorca grew more recently: small workshops and a local costume-jewellery industry expanded in the 19th–20th centuries, and "Made in Menorca" artisan production (silver, plated pieces, and later contemporary design collections) have became a recognised local trade. Many contemporary Artisans still use traditional techniques (filigree, hand-setting) and island-inspired motifs.
Best buys — what to look for
-
Sterling silver pieces — Lightweight, timeless and often handcrafted on the island. Good value for design and durability; many shops offer silver pendants, rings and delicate chains.
-
Island-themed pendants & keepsakes — Silhouettes of Menorca, shells, waves and Maò/Ciutadella motifs make perfect local souvenirs and are commonly made by local artisans.
-
Semi-precious stone jewellery (turquoise, amazonite, rose quartz) — Evokes the sea and sunsets; common in summer collections produced locally. Look for quality sterling settings rather than cheap plating.
-
Handmade gold & silver designer pieces — For investment or special gifts, a few Menorcan designers craft gold and silver collections with contemporary forms inspired by the island’s stone and sea. Expect higher prices but distinctive designs.
-
Market finds & artisan costume jewellery — Night markets are fun, have many Artisan stalls with affordable pieces and good for meeting makers. Ask about materials and maker/workshop visits.
