Our place on Menorca is not far Mahón so we have spent a lot of time in the Capital - early sunrises to late at night. Many visitors and bloggers seem to miss so much in Mahon - don't be one of them! There's a lot more to a day visit in Mahon than a Market and a Harbour boat trip!

As with everything on Menorca it is small scale - no underground or Metros ,no e-scooter hirers to dodge, no big avenues or high rises... all the lack of which reflects the Menorca difference.
Mahon will also often be written as Maó (the Catalan and local name pronounced 'maouw') and Mahón (Spanish) - everyone will understand Mahon though.

Mahon practical visitor advice
Busiest day is Saturday ( a Market day ), especially in summer with eager tourists.
Sundays most shops will be closed ( not eating places ) and on Mondays attractions are often taking a break.

Mahon Tour Buses
There are NO city bus tours or rickshaws etc . The fun ting ting train, 'Mahon Express' is good way to get a quick overview of Mahon without walking and great for children. Departs from main square ( Placa de s'Esplanada ) for a ~50 min trip around Mahon's principle sights. The ticket will allow you to get off and back on at set points ( Ses Voltes steps, Port Mahon Hotel ) if you want to explore an area you fancy.

Must see sights of Mahon
With a very strategic harbour location in former times Mahon as attracted a lot of military invaders and they have left behind Architecture (Georgian) and noble town houses that today make up the capital's visual history aswell as Mahon harbours popular tourist visits. Mahon has a visual blend quite unique and distince from oter distinct from other Balearic or Spanish towns. The british also left a very popular legacy of Mahón Gin.

SIESTA RULES!
Shops are typically open from 9/10am until 1 or 2pm. They then close for the big mid-day meal and siesta. Shops re-open around 5 - 5:30 pm and close again at 8 - 9pm. Most shops are closed on Sundays. Time to enjoy a Tapas?

Mahon where to eat?
With so many good and varied choices they deserve more attention than there is space for here - Our Mahon Bar and Restaurant Recommendations. However legal staff rest-days (often Mon,Tues or Wed) may influnece which day you visit Mahon.
TIPS? As always the sound of local voices is your best clue for great food and value. Wandering down a sidetreets of the popular tourist areas will bring special finds. Live it up at the Mahón Yacht Marina day or evening.

The city centre is easy enough on foot but a bicycle or e-bike is a great way to see much more (NO e-scooter services like BOLT on Menorca)

Parking zones are color coded to show who is allowed to park there ( with fines for misuse! ) :
- GREEN - residents only
- Blue - anyone ,but usually with a meter somewhere to get a ticket
Good to know - In Spain, parking areas marked with blue lines indicate regulated parking zones, commonly referred to as "Zona Azu" (Blue Zone). Designated for short-term parking ( Max. 2H ) and usually require a time based fee - take small coins!
Some areas are resticted traffic wise (Fines issued via a camera) Pay and display blue areas are limited to 2 hours. Parking in the Car Parks on the outskirts of Mahon is mostly free.
